Facebook introduces spherical video at the F8 Facebook Developer Conference 2015
Social media giant Facebook is currently testing what it calls “spherical videos”, part of a new breed of online video you can “move through,” very similar to 3D gaming video’s.
Zuckerberg says “We’re at this interesting transition where we’re starting to see traditional video blend with even more immersive content.”
Company founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg unraveled the new technology this morning during his keynote opening address at Facebook’s annual F8 developer conference in San Francisco.
“You can move around within it, and you can change your viewing angle. And that’s possible because the videos are filmed on up to 24 different cameras at once”
“It’s not something you just consume passively, you’re actually interacting with it, and you feel like you’re there. ”
“People already watch 3 billion video’s a day in news feed”
“You’re going to be able to put on your head set and feel like you’re really there.”
The company is demonstrating the new video format for attendees at this week’s F8 conference by showing off the 24-camera-view spherical camera at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
Zuckerberg describes the teleportation station “Oculus” as humorously and ironically named.
The plan, Zuckerberg says, is to eventually have these spherical video’s available in the news feed.
As soon as today, the company is asking third-party publishers to create their own spherical videos for sharing across Facebook.
